Sports information directors are tasked with documenting and publicizing the accomplishments of athletes and teams for the school or league they represent, typically working as a liaison between the school or league and the local or national media, according to one article on The Balance.
“As seasons cross over, sports information directors can face long hours in their variety of responsibilities. On the other hand, the many different responsibilities appeal to some. Sports information professionals get an inside look at the teams they cover, access that many find enjoyable,” the article states.
William Woods University’s own Sports Information Director Travis Rae was recently awarded the American Midwest Conference’s 2017 Sports Information Director of the Year award.
Rae has both a bachelor’s in sports management (University of Wisconsin-Parkside) and a master’s degree in sports management (Cardinal Stritch, Wisc.).
“”We have a group of dedicated athletic communication professionals and to be honored by them is amazing. I wouldn’t have achieved this without the help of my GA and student workers who helped out. My goal each day is to promote the Owl brand and William Woods student-athletes. We have been successful as a department in doing so – thanks to the hard work of our coaches and student-athletes,” said Rae on the Owls’ site.
